When submitting an employee for a clearance upgrade, the security officer first sends an SF86 to the employee to update / complete. Upon receipt of the completed SF86, the next step is to create a 4311 form for that employee. Once both forms are completed, they are submitted to the government for processing. Depending on the clearance level requested, a polygraph interview may then be scheduled and conducted. After an adjudication process, the upgrade clearance is either granted or denied. For some clearance levels, an SOP briefing is then scheduled for the employee using an SOP briefing form; for lower-level clearances, a 312 form is submitted.
